Pintor y grabador francés. Fue formado por su padre, pintor retratista, y en la École des Beaux-Arts. Aunque se asoció con artistas progresistas (Gustave Courbet,
Eugène Delacroix,
Édouard Manet), fue un tradicionalista, mejor conocido por sus retratos y bodegones con flores. Sus retratos de grupo, que evocan los del gremio holandés del s. XVII, representan personajes literarios y artísticos de la época. Sus pinturas de flores fueron especialmente populares en Inglaterra gracias a
James McNeill Whistler y
John Everett Millais, quienes encontraron mecenas que lo apoyaran. Dedicó sus últimos años a la litografía.
